EUDI Wallet 2026: architecture implications.

September 2026 EUDI Wallet intelligence for enterprises and public bodies: architecture, selective disclosure, relying-party design and when blockchain may or may not add value.

Updated September 2026

EUDI Wallets are a near-term infrastructure consideration.

The European Commission states that Member States will make EU Digital Identity Wallets available to citizens, residents and businesses by the end of 2026. For organisations building verification, credential or trust workflows, that changes the architecture conversation.

ARCHITECTURE QUESTIONS

What organisations should examine now

  • Which attributes can be verified without collecting full identity datasets?
  • Where selective disclosure or privacy-preserving proofs are relevant.
  • How issuer, wallet and relying-party roles map to the operating model.
  • Which evidence belongs on-chain, off-chain or not on a blockchain at all.
  • How interoperability, consent and revocation should work.

Blockchain is not automatically required for EUDI-related services.

The EUDI framework is an identity and trust-services framework. A DLT component should only be introduced where multi-party governance, shared evidence, provenance or another concrete requirement justifies it. The Hub therefore positions blockchain as one possible evidence/trust layer rather than conflating EUDI Wallets with blockchain.
